Cover reveal, ya’ll! Route 12 by Marietta Miles

route 12 final

Coming February 15, 2016, the novella Route 12 is set in Virginia and Tennessee in the 1970s. The book is a wonderful, poetic take on the devastating effects of trauma and abandonment on a couple of special teenagers who have a tragic, inevitable meeting. The book is spare, tightly written, and never, ever sentimental — just the way we like it here at All Due Respect Books. Plus, there is plenty of crime and just the worst kind of human behavior. You know, the fun  stuff.

Also included in the volume is a second novella Blood and Sin, set in North Carolina in 1964. Like Route 12, it is lovely, poetic, and truly shocking in it’s depiction of just how horribly humans will sometimes treat each other. There is a reverend named Pastor Friend who breathes hate for women while pretending to help. And there is a nearly invisible woman named Naomi, and she ultimately comes into complete focus at the hands of Ms. Miles. Read it, you’ll thank us.

More in-depth synopses:

Route 12

It’s the early-1970’s in rural Appalachia when deputies take Percy Caito’s mother away. Declared ward of the court and sent to state run Belle Gap Home for Boys he begins his brutal new life caged and afraid.

After growing up behind bars among boys and men who live to cause harm, Percy is free. Full of hate, high on lies and killing he heads for the isolated mining town of Belle Gap.

He rooms in a rundown boarding house on the outskirts of town. As he settles in, Percy notices the owner’s daughter, a lonely teenage girl named Cheryl. She’s feeble, breakable, the perfect prey.

When Cheryl finds a friend in pretty but haunted Theresa, Percy spies his chance, begins to plot and plan. He follows them and watches, stalking and learning. He sees how alone they are, how forgotten.

Easily, they fall into each trap he sets, grab at each lure he lays. With no one watching out for them, they wander further into his deadly game of cat and mouse until there is no way out and no turning back.

Blood and Sin

In a small church on a long gravel drive, three lives converge.
